I sit here on 4/19 reminiscing of days past…the day before the infamous 4/20… my 20th wedding anniversary! Yes! It is true…but I suppose the day is more widely know as a national holiday in the cannabis culture. Oddly, we all know what “420” means, smokers and non..but why? Where did this come from? It remains somewhat of a mystery with several working theories out there.
Some say “420” is a police code meaning “marijuana smoking in progress”…hmmm
Some say is is Adolf Hitlor’s birthday… ok, so…. that certainly does not make sense! One theory says there are 420 active chemicals in marijuana, hence the connection, but I don’t know that to be true.
Upon a quick google search, the most credible theory dates back to 1970 in Marin County, California. Apparently there was a group of high school boys known as the “Waldos” who would meet at the wall every day at 4:20 to smoke pot. They would say “420” as their secret code to partake. Story has it that one of the guys later got a job with the Grateful Dead bassist and the band helped coin the term. Plausible, ok, I’ll go with that!
Whatever, and however it came to be, like any holiday, I think 4/20 means something different to each of us, and it certainly has evolved over time. To me, as a non-smoker, it means my anniversary! To some, it means a day to get high and celebrate, to others it may symbolize legalization movements. As the marijuana industry is evolving, it is becoming a very commercialized day. For example, the cannabis cup, help on 4/20 attracts many vendors and even big artists like Snoop Dogg. As legalization sweeps the nation, 420 is bound to be another corporate money-making day, like St. Patty’s and green beer.
What will you do on 4/20? What does 4/20 mean to you? What ever the case, I hope y’all have a great 420!
